The world will never be the same once you've seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump.
A man with a low IQ has accomplished great things in his life and been present during significant historic events—in each case, far exceeding what anyone imagined he could do. But despite all he has achieved, his one true love eludes him.
Why it's in the Vault
Forrest Gump is undeniably one of the defining Hollywood films of the 1990s, with an extraordinary performance from Tom Hanks at its center. Robert Zemeckis follows an unlikely protagonist through several decades of American history, combining humor, romance, tragedy and moments of remarkable tenderness. The ambition is impressive, and its place in popular cinema is well deserved. Yet that very ambition can also become exhausting. As Forrest moves from childhood to military service and then through an entirely new succession of experiences, the story can feel less like one continuous film than two sprawling films joined together. At 142 minutes, its episodic structure and repeated emotional turns make the journey feel considerably longer than its running time suggests. The acting, technical craft and cultural significance remain admirable, but they do not entirely overcome the problem of pacing. A great achievement in many respects, yet a film whose length makes a return visit difficult to imagine. Worth exploring, even if it is not a personal favorite.
