The Mummy Returns

Adventure is reborn.

20012h09Stephen Sommers6.4 / 10 (7,718 votes)

Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, along with their 8-year-old son Alex, discover the key to the legendary Scorpion King’s might: the fabled Bracelet of Anubis. Unfortunately, a newly resurrected Imhotep has designs on the bracelet as well, and isn’t above kidnapping its new bearer, Alex, to gain control of Anubis’s otherworldly army.

Why it's in the Vault

The Mummy Returns takes everything that made the first adventure so enjoyable and turns the spectacle up another notch. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz remain an irresistible duo, but the addition of their son Alex gives Rick and Evelyn's relationship a lively new family dynamic. Stephen Sommers fills the screen with ancient temples, supernatural armies, elaborate battles and a wonderfully reckless sense of adventure. Alan Silvestri's sweeping score adds an extra layer of excitement to the increasingly extravagant action. The film sometimes becomes overloaded with digital creatures and frantic set pieces, and some effects have aged particularly badly, but its energy, humor and imaginative generosity remain infectious. A slightly more enjoyable adventure than its predecessor, even if both belong to the same delightful tier of blockbuster entertainment.
