Why it's in the Vault
Jumanji: The Next Level takes the familiar formula of Welcome to the Jungle and proves that a sequel can still be enjoyable without reinventing everything. Jake Kasdan reunites the principal cast, but introduces enough changes to keep the adventure fresh: different avatar assignments, new abilities, unexpected environments and the arrival of two older characters who bring their own comic energy. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan clearly enjoy playing with these shifting personalities, while Danny DeVito and Danny Glover give the story a welcome generational dimension. The narrative follows a recognizable structure, and the element of surprise is naturally less powerful than in the previous installment. Yet the humor, chemistry and imaginative new challenges make the return to Jumanji worthwhile. A solid sequel that understands what made its predecessor entertaining while finding just enough originality to justify another round. A good three out of five.
