From Board Game to Video Game
The magical game transforms into a video game, allowing the sequel to reinterpret the original premise for a new generation.

The game has evolved.
Four teenagers in detention discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of. When they decide to play, they are immediately sucked into the jungle world of Jumanji in the bodies of their avatars. They’ll have to complete the adventure of their lives filled with fun, thrills and danger or be stuck in the game forever!
Why it's in the Vault
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle succeeds by understanding that the best way to revisit a beloved childhood adventure is not necessarily to reproduce it. Rather than sending the jungle into the real world again, Jake Kasdan transforms the mysterious board game into a video game and sends four teenagers into its dangerous universe. The idea is clever, and the rules of gaming — avatars, special abilities, weaknesses and limited lives — provide an entertaining new foundation for the adventure. Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and especially Jack Black make the most of the contrast between their imposing adult appearances and the teenagers they actually represent. The humor is more prominent and the atmosphere less mysterious than in the 1995 original, but the film preserves Jumanji's essential appeal: an unpredictable world where every new challenge demands courage and cooperation. A genuinely enjoyable reinvention that respects its predecessor without living entirely in its shadow. A very good three-and-a-half stars.
