The Hunt for Red October

Invisible. Silent. Stolen.

19902h15John McTiernan7.4 / 10 (3,638 votes)

A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius. The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. Lone CIA analyst Jack Ryan has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find Ramius, too. The hunt is on!

Why it's in the Vault

The Hunt for Red October is a superbly crafted Cold War thriller that transforms the silent depths of the ocean into a battlefield of intelligence, suspicion and nerve. John McTiernan builds tension through strategic decisions rather than constant action, while Sean Connery gives Captain Marko Ramius an imposing, enigmatic presence and Alec Baldwin makes Jack Ryan a compelling counterpoint. The submarine interiors, the uncertainty surrounding Ramius's intentions and the careful escalation of danger create an absorbing atmosphere. But the film has another extraordinary asset: Basil Poledouris's magnificent score. The choral grandeur of Hymn to Red October lends the story an almost mythic weight, making its musical identity as memorable as its suspense. An accomplished, thoroughly enjoyable thriller whose soundtrack alone deserves to be celebrated.
