A New Director
Rob Cohen took over directing duties from Stephen Sommers, who had directed the first two films.

A new evil awakens.
Archaeologist Rick O'Connell travels to China, pitting him against an emperor from the 2,000-year-old Han dynasty who's returned from the dead to pursue a quest for world domination. This time, O'Connell enlists the help of his wife and son to quash the so-called 'Dragon Emperor' and his abuse of supernatural power.
Why it's in the Vault
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor takes the franchise in a dramatically different direction, exchanging Egyptian tombs for ancient Chinese legends, a terracotta army and a supernatural emperor. The change of setting brings welcome visual variety, and Brendan Fraser still gives Rick O'Connell his familiar blend of bravery and humor. Jet Li lends the villain an imposing presence, while Michelle Yeoh adds elegance and authority to the mythology. Yet something essential has been lost along the way. The replacement of Rachel Weisz, the altered family dynamic and an increasingly frantic reliance on digital spectacle weaken the chemistry that made the first two adventures so enjoyable. The action remains generous, but the characters and story rarely recapture the earlier films' effortless charm. An entertaining enough fantasy adventure with appealing ideas, though clearly a step below its predecessors.
