Return to a galaxy far far away.

19832h13Richard Marquand7.9 / 10 (16,989 votes)

Luke Skywalker leads a mission to rescue his friend Han Solo from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt, the Emperor prepares to crush the Rebellion with a more powerful Death Star, and the Rebel fleet mounts a massive attack on the space station. Luke Skywalker confronts Darth Vader in a final climactic duel before the evil Emperor.

Why it's in the Vault

Return of the Jedi brings the original Star Wars trilogy to a grand conclusion, combining spectacular space battles, familiar characters and a more personal confrontation between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Richard Marquand moves between the criminal underworld of Tatooine, the forests of Endor and the looming threat of a new Death Star, offering a varied adventure filled with memorable settings and creatures. The film reaches its strongest moments when it explores the conflict between family loyalty, temptation and redemption, giving the saga a welcome emotional dimension. John Williams's music remains magnificent, and the elaborate models, costumes and creature effects preserve the distinctive handmade charm of the original trilogy. Nevertheless, some action sequences and visual effects reveal their age, while the lighter Ewok storyline occasionally disrupts the tension and gives the narrative an uneven rhythm. An entertaining and culturally significant finale that closes a legendary chapter of science-fiction cinema, even if its mixture of darker drama and family-friendly spectacle does not always feel perfectly balanced.
